The New Retirement
The ‘new retirement’ is not an ending,
it's a new beginning, the start of a new life journey of vastly expanded
proportion.
— from The New Retirement
by Richard P. Johnson, Ph.D.
The average first retirement age is somewhere around 57. (The old age
was 65.)
The old retirement model was seen as a reward to be achieved —
a nirvana-like place where there would be no more decisions, schedules,
or supervisors. There would be relief from stress, but also no more accolades,
promotions, camaraderie, or sense of accomplishment. But there would also
be seeds of dependency, passivity and of ill-health.
The new retirement model promises a heightened sense of one’s own
authentic self, and a new passion for discovery not felt since youth.
Not all retirees will want to pursue the new retirement.
